How Mathematics Is Taught

Mathematics at Revoe follows a clear and consistent structure. Teachers use a model called I do, We do, You do. This helps learners see clear examples from their teacher, practice together and then apply the concept independently with growing confidence.

We use high quality resources and carefully selected manipulatives at every stage so that learning is active and meaningful. The Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach is central to everything we do. Children explore new ideas with practical equipment, then move to pictures and finally to written representations once they truly understand.

Mastering Number

Our Mastering Number program supports secure number facts and number sense throughout all year groups. We have daily sessions which help build children's understanding and language surrounding number. We also use NumBots and Times Table Rockstars to boost fluency and confidence throughout the school!

Thinking Back

Thinking Back activities open every lesson and help children activate prior knowledge and make strong links across their learning. Reasoning, explanation and the use of precise vocabulary sit at the core of every lesson so that children understand not just what to do but why it works.

Curriculum Overview

Our Maths curriculum takes children on a rich and carefully designed journey from early years to year six. Language is a key part of this journey. Children learn important mathematical vocabulary from the start and continue to use and build on this language every year so that they can explain their ideas clearly and confidently. We follow a mastery approach which means children learn new concepts in small steps and spend time really understanding them. Following Concrete, Pictorial Abstract, children use practical equipment, clear pictures and then written methods so children move on only when they are ready.

We have created our own bespoke S Plans for each mathematical concept. These plans guide children through a smooth and well-structured learning pathway so that every lesson connects to the next. This helps children enjoy success, make sense of their learning and feel excited about the progress they make. Our approach allows every child to grow at their own pace while still feeling challenged, supported and proud of what they can do.

Enrichment Opportunities

We believe mathematics should be lived and experienced. Children take part in exciting, themed days that celebrate the wonder of number, pattern and problem solving. Children enjoy things such as STEM Week and World Maths Day which provide opportunities to apply mathematical thinking in real projects around the school. Every learner has the chance to see how mathematical learning connects to the wider world.

Supporting Learning at Home

Families play a vital part in supporting mathematical confidence. Little and often practice helps children feel secure and ready for new challenges. Parents can support children by:

  • Talking about Maths in daily life such as measuring ingredients, reading timetables and comparing prices.
  • KS2 – Encourage use of TTRockstars on children's chromebook's at home
  • KS1 – Use your child's Numbots at home
